Sun Ringle Black Flag Pro SL 29er Wheelset

Product Reviews - New Product Introductions

A few Team Bikeman riders raced on last years Sun-Ringle Black Flag Pro wheelsets with no issues.  For 2013 Sun-Ringle has upped the ante with the Black Flag Pro SL 29er Wheelset.  Same great features as the Pro, but about 125 grams lighter thanks to a new and improved rim and lighter, bladed spokes.  Couple that with tubeless capability out of the box and a ton of included extras and we think Sun-Ringle has delivered another winner.

At first glance these wheels look pretty straightforward, and for the most part, they are.  The hubs are svelte, yet beefy, with a whole slew of adapters that allow you to run pretty much any axle right out of the box.  With the exception of 135mm x 12mm rear axles (available separately) Sun-Ringle has you covered.  The wheels are shipped with 9, 15, and 20mm end caps for up front and 9mm and 142x12 thru axle end caps for the rear.  You can change the front wheel axle by hand and the rear only takes a few minutes with common tools.

From the hub, Sun-Ringle tasked Wheelsmith straight pull bladed spokes and alloy nips with the job of holding the whole shebang together.  The rims are on the narrow side by today's standards at 23mm wide.  The Black Flag lineup is billed as XC/trail wheels so that width actually is perfect.  These aren't wheels for huckin' junior.  If that's your style check out the Charger series which has 27+mm wide rims. Another interesting thing about these rims is that they use BST technology licensed from Stan's No Tubes. In short, BST optimizes the tire rim contact area by using lower sidewalls which allows the tire to round out more naturally and lowers the weight of the rim. To compliment the Stan's  technology Sun-Ringle is kind enough to also include tubeless rim strips, valve cores, and tire sealant.

And if all the tubeless supplies and axle adapters weren't enough, Sun-Ringle is even nice enough to include exytra spokes and nipples just in case. All in all a very nice, light, wheelset that includes pretty much everything except tires.  Grab some today for racing or just ripping up your local trails.
