Niner Carbon Forks and Carbon Flat Top Handlebars

Product Reviews - New Product Introductions

Niner Carbon Forks and Flat Top Handlebars landed here at BikemanHQ recently and boy are the purdy.  We have both forks and handlebars available in regular and RDO (Race Day Only) versions.  niner has made quite a name for themselves in recent years.  They were the first bike company to start up making only 29ers right out of the gate.  As their bike line up has expanded so too has there range of high quality parts.

Lets start with the forks. Bikeman offers two different options, the tapered steerer RDO with QR15 thru axle, and the 1-1/8" steerered regular version.
Here are their shared traits:
  • 5 year warranty (pretty darn good)
  • No rider weight limit
  • 470mm axle-to-crown
  • Disc only, direct mount
  • 185mm max rotor size

The RDO version weighs in at 630g with a beefy tapered steerer and QR15 while the regular version with the 1-1/8" steerer is a svelte 565g.  As you can see in the picture above the tapered version is substantially larger at the crown.  Pair that extra beef with the QR15 and you have yourself a very laterally rigid, yet vertically complaint fork.  That's not to say the regular 1-1/8" version is a noodle, but it isn't going to track as true through the rough stuff.  They both ride amazing, so don't over think it.

Another nice touch on the 1-1/8" version is the stainless steel inserts on the drop out.  It looks cool and is a great way to keep things intact in a high wear zone with minimal added weight.  Speaking of looking cool, Niner won an award in 2010 at Eurobike for the cutting edge design of this fork.  By utilizing monocoque construction instead of glued together 3 piece construction, Niner makes a fork that is lighter and more compliant that will also be stronger.

We also have the Niner Flat Top handlebar in the standard (175g) and RDO (156g) version.  Plenty wide at 710mm uncut (with graduated cutting lines down to 650mm) with 9 degrees of sweep, the bars are essentially a flat bar but with a very interesting and ingenious twist.  The 31.8mm clamp bulge is offset so that you can either raise/lower the bar by 5mm versus a more conventionally centered clamp bulge. It's amazing what 5mm of +/- rise can do...seriously.  With bar end compatibility and Niners 5 year warranty, these bars are a very solid deal.
