Bikeman has been known to play favorites and he's been playing favorites with RaceFace Turbine cranks for a long time. Tracing back to the original RaceFace Turbine forged cranks back in the late 90's, RaceFace has been crushing it for almost 25 years. The version of the single ring RaceFace Turbine Crank we'll be eyeballing today is a chip off the old block. Forged aluminum arms with the Turbine's timeless style and ability to take a beatin', all without weighing a ton.
The 2014 RaceFaceTurbine crank comes in many different configurations. What we are reviewing is the Turbine SS Enduro 104bcd 4 bolt crank with a single narrow wide chainring and bottom bracket. The Turbine is also available as a 80/120 4 bolt pattern if you want to run a modern 2X drivetrain. There is also an SL model, which uses a titanium spindle to bring down the weight and increase the price. There are so many possibilities it's a little mind numbing. Specs are listed at the end of this post and all of Bikeman's current offerings can be found here. The crank pictured here has a weight of 666 grams with 175mm arms and a 30t ring. Add the 86 grams for the included bottom bracket and you get a complete weight of 752 grams. Not bad. One of the coolest features on this crankset are the shims that take the place of an outer ring or bash guard. Cleans up the look and makes it so you don't have to have single speed specific chainring bolts. Which in turn makes the addition of a bashguard easier. Nice little touch.
You may be asking yourself "Isn't this just singlespeed crank?" Well...yes and no. From where we sit, this cranks is part of the natural progression in drivetrains. First came 1X9 drivetrains, then clutch style rear derailleurs and 11-36 cassettes, then SRAM XX1, which brought about 30t direct mount (the bolt holes are threaded!) narrow/wide chainrings for 104bcd, which lead to 42t and 40t cassette range expanders for 10 speed, which leaves us here. The future is now and RaceFace has just made it easier to get current with the addition of 30t and 32t single ring cranks to their line up. Gone are the days of having to buy a crankarm sets and chainrings separately, or worse having to strip the ramped and pinned chainrings off of a new crankset then having to buy a single ring on top of that. If you need any more proof that single ring set ups are the future just look at Santa Cruz's new Nomad, which has no way to mount any type of front derailleur. If you're looking for a great all around crank for your new single ring endeavor, look no further.
