Team Bikeman -
A lot of strong riders in solo, including the european champion. The course was not too technical and 5.6 miles long. The climbs where short and steep, 900 feet a lap. I went off too fast, but after 5 laps I could pace myself. I ate mostly liquid carbohydrates like squeezy and had no stomach problems at all. I did steady laps, but at night I slowed down a bit, and my stops got a bit longer. Five o`clock in the morning was a critical point and I fell asleep for 10 minutes in a chair. My lights played some tricks on me and went black during the laps.
Luckily I had my old Petzl headlamp which saved the night. My girlfriend supported me and did a great job. How nice is it to get a warm soup at three in the morning and have your back massaged!? Because of the short laps she was pretty busy and did not sleep until six in the morning. The best part was racing when the sun came up but it was still a long way to go. My whole body was ready to quit but the voice in my head told me to go on. One hour before the race was over it started to rain very hard. I completed my 24th lap and that was it. That`s 135 miles and 22`000 feets climbing which placed me 28th out of 41. What a way to spend a weekend ! Greetz.Juerg Bauert
