12 Hours of Endurance

Team Bikeman - Race Reports

The race started with an uphill Lemans style start at 7:00 AM sharp. Both Bikeman boys made it into the mix and quickly settled into their respective strategies. For Dave, this meant conserving energy and spending it equally throughout the entire 12 hours. For Troy, the plan was to average 1 hour laps by banking time for the first half of the race, then gradually withdrawing it in the second. With the ensuing heat and dehydration that eventually got the best of poor Troy, this would later prove to be a disastrous plan as is evidenced by the following data:

After lap 2 - Troy was in 6th overall while Dave was in 24th overall.
After lap 4 - Troy slipped to 8th while Dave maintained 24th.
By lap 6 - Troy slipped further to 11th while Dave climbed to 20th.
At lap 8 - It was Troy holding 11th and Dave up to the 16th spot.
Finally, after 10 - Troy fell another 3 to 14th while Dave finished 16th.

My teammates sometime accuse me of being too analytical I don't see it! If you graph it out, it doesn't take an overly analytical genius to deduce that those lines were about to cross. Nice job Dave! In the end both racers finished with 10 laps (100 miles and 13,500 feet of climbing) and just 35 minutes separating them. By race end, temps were hitting the upper 80's to lower 90's on a course that, very un-Park City like, offers no shelter from the sun whatsoever. Endurance Racing 101 - For love of god DRINK!

In continuing with the ultra-endurance thing, both Troy and Dave are very much looking forward the 200+ mile Logan, UT to Jackson, WY road race (LOTOJA). The good news? The Campeon has two bottle cages, while the El Santo has but one. Check out http://www.lotojaclassic.com/LOTOJAmain_content.html
