I have typically started my cyclocross season with the Suckerbrook Cyclocross and this year was no exception. But this year is going to be a lot different than past years, in the past I’ve always started with this race and planned on doing as many as I can until the NBX races in December. What's making this year different is the Cyclocross National Championships in Hartford Connecticut in January. I figure it could be years before they're back on the east coast so this may be my only chance to race nationals.
After spending my summer riding and racing my mtn bike, the first cyclocross race of the year was a bit of a shock to my system but no less than I expected. I had changed my training to suit the shorter more intense efforts that cyclocross requires but nothing can prepare you for the first race of the season going full blast from start to finish.
This year I'm trying some new things like warming up on a trainer, doing more core work, focusing on my technique and skills as opposed to just flat out speed, and for the most part looking back on my first race, these new ideas worked out well. The best part was being able to do a good warm up on the Feedback Sports Omnium Trainer my wife surprised me with for my birthday a few weeks ago. I also decided this year that I wouldn't try to go out so hard at the start just to make up spots that I'm going to give back on lap two. So, that being said, onto my race. I got an ok start without stressing about making up as many places as I could and rode the first two laps really cleanly. I was passing some riders and having fun but on lap three, my back tightened up and I started getting passed by the same guys I passed on the first two laps. I held on for as long as I could and tried to finish strong but ended up getting pulled and placed before starting my last lap.
All in all I’m happy with how the first cyclocross race of the year went and looking forward to The Minuteman Road Club's race in a few weeks when I can try again. I did see something that you can only see at a cyclocross race. While cooling down there were a couple of kids taking turns running around wearing an inflatable Tyrannosaurus Rex costume. They were having fun and every one was getting a big kick out of it.
