My family and I traveled home from the Valley of the Sun Stage race on Monday. On Wednesday I got a call from a friend who was looking for a teammate to race a 10 hour mountain bike race in Silver City, NM. Her previous partner came down with the flu and she needed a last minute replacement. After getting permission from the wife, I said, "Count me in!"
I was very worried about this race since I haven't been on my mountain bike at all over the winter. In fact, I had bought some Carver Carbon 29er wheels that I've only had one opportunity to ride. This would be a great test for a new wheel-set.
The weather for the race was dry, however, there was a very high wind and temperatures ranged from the 20s to the 50s. The race also had around 7 stream crossings that left you with some pretty cold feet. This may have helped to my advantage since I race very well in the cold and less so in the heat.
My partner and I each had a great day on the bike. I turned a very nice first lap, positioning us ahead of many of the slower riders. My teammate's first lap was the fastest female lap recorded of the day. We both maintained consistent times through the day, each riding 5, 12 mile laps over the ten hour period. On my teammate's last lap she was able to lap our 2nd place competition which solidified our win and also removed the question of whether or not I should do a 6th lap.
We ended up winning the Duo-coed and finished 4th overall as the first duo team, beating the duo male team as well.
I can't say enough about all of the Carver wheels I now have for my bikes. They have been flawless with everything I have thrown at them. I'm 210lbs currently and ride hard always. I'm so happy to have Carbon wheels I can count on.
Last year I had ordered the Carver pullover sweater and it definitely came in use between laps with the wind and cold weather.
Here is a picture of myself and my teammate on the podium. The lighting isn't the best since there was no daylight left.
