This weekend I raced at the 2nd annual UMF Snow Sports Mountain Bike Race and Trail Run located at Titcomb Mountain, a small ski area with an awesome trail system for biking in Farmington, Maine. The day began cool and cloudy but by the start of the race the sky cleared and racers had shed their jackets and arm warmers.
I entered the Novice division (1 lap) which was combined with the Sport division (2 laps) and waited anxiously in the front row. Once the race began, I was able to maintain my position behind three Sport riders as we ascended up the first long, steep climb. At the crest, the trail changed and began to meander through trees across the top of the mountain. The single track eventually became more technical with exposed roots, tight turns, rock piles, fallen logs, and other natural obstacles. It was awesome and fun to navigate but certainly required all of my attention. During this phase of the race I was able to pass one of the Sport riders and maintain 3rd position overall through the 1st lap.
Following the long, technical phase, the course opened to a clearing at the top of the ski area and transitioned to a windy, fast downhill section ending at the start/finish line.
I finished 1st, Novice, in just over 29 minutes. I highly recommend Titcomb Mountain and look forward to seeing other BIKEMAN riders next year.
