First lap was pretty fast all the way around. I sat in the back and just observed the course, never having done it. When we got to the first set of major climbs, the lead pack got whittled down to around 50 riders. This was followed by a 52 mph downhill for a few minutes where the lead guys would string out a bit, then pile in back together for another whopper of a climb before we went through a downhill and a rotary that marked the end of the lap.
Second, and final lap, I notice the field slowing up a bit on a grinder, so I popped out the left and went out to see if anyone would follow me up. One guy stayed with, but then went around me and just kept on going. I didn't think I could stay on his wheel, so I just sat up and waited for the pack to devour me, rather than timetrial in the considerable wind by myself. That guy was really strong and stayed away for almost the entire 2nd lap, but of course we caught him on one of the final downhills. I saw his drool-covered face as we passed him and felt kind of bad. I don't think he made it to the end with our group.
Towards the end, 30 or so guys were left in the lead group as we navigated some traffic cone lanes through the rotary, and started the finishing climb up to the ski resort. Some rider hit one of the traffic cones and took a few guys down (the cone setup was admittedly a bit confusing). Naturally, there was lots of swearing and yelling. This also meant I was in sort of a lousy position going through the last corner and got boxed in, so I didn't have very good drive for the climb. It was a really long grinding climb up that mountain, and it took a while before the finish was even in sight. I left it in the bigring, and was committed to staying in the selected gear, I managed to pass a bunch of guys right before the line to grab 14th place. My legs literally ran out of steam, as my they were barely even rotating the cranks as I crossed the finish line. Note to self for next year: you are not superman, this is probably not a big ring hill.
The race was sort of a letdown as I was really hoping for another top 10, but it could have been worse.
