My race almost was over before it got started. I got to Candia, NH only to realize I'd forgotten my bike shorts. Doh! Fortunately a kind soul from another team overheard me talking to someone and produced a pair to borrow. That solved, I managed to fit in an oh-so brief warm-up that did nothing to prepare me for the hammerfest to follow. Two words: Fast Course! Almost all double track, pretty non-technical except for one short steep singletrack climb. The last leg of the course has a longer grinding climb. The crest of this seemed to be a spectator favorite and there were even a few with cowbells to cheer the riders on. I took the start of the race bit too hard. The start had a long descent with a narrow dry section to the left of muddy ruts. So I hammered from the start to get ahead of any logjams. Unfortunately, I didn't do a good job of easing back and pacing myself once the descent was over. I blew up a bit after leading for 1/3 of a lap or so. Guess I didn't do enough long intervals this winter! Rode within my limits on the climbs, hammered on the flats as best I could and made it through to an 11th place finish despite back and stomach ache. Jim Hemond got 13th in his race and Matt Hersey took 12th in his.
