There were 21 starters. Not too many but Sunday morning was the WVMBA Points Series race so many were saving energy for the points.
At the start line I'm admiring the Trek Top Fuel bike in front of me when the rider turns around and says "Hey, how's it going?" And it's NORBA pro, Jeremiah Bishop. Nice. All racing for 2nd now?
The race started faster than I thought for a 60K. Eventually I settled in to a rhythm when things spread out snaking through some nice single track. Then it was a very short paved road section in Black Water Falls Park. Then onto a forest road climb to some super technical and rocky single track with all the above mentioned goodies. The trails were tight and packed with rhododendrons.
One section was a long gas line clearing up hill on soggy-grass-swamp land. Legs burning just to go 4 mph through the muck! We would return down that same gas line later. No better coming down, 13 mph sideways, with mud spraying all over my face. After one last HUGE climb on the Canaan Loop Forest Road we back tracked some rocky single track then back on to the gas line return mention above, and then down a double track to the finish line where I finished 7th out of 21 starters. Apparently a few people ahead of me veard off course and did less miles than the rest of us so they were DQed.
I finished the 60K in a little over 4 hours. Considering the terrain and length of the climbs I'm pretty happy with that. Next Sat. @ Midnight the real fun starts with the 12 Hours of Lodi Farms in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Can't wait!
