The 45NRTH Fasterkatt Cycling Shoe is in! Billed as wet weather winter cycling shoe, the Fasterkatt certainly fills a niche. Team Bikeman is excited about trying it out for cyclocross racing as the mecury continues to drop. Bikeman has a long history of sourcing only the best cold weather cycling shoes and the Fasterkatt is no exception. Preventing cold feet while cycling is the best way to keep cold weather cycling from switching over from surprisingly fun & pleasant to soul crushingly bad.
Bikeman lives up here in Maine, where the climate calls for foot warming measures 5+ months a year...and yet he still rides year round. Thanks in no small part to recent developments in cold weather cycling gear. For the last 10 years the Lake MXZ and CXZ winter cycling boots have been the cold weather cycling shoes of choice for thousands of our customers. Super toasty...but at times a little too toasty when the temps rose above freezing. Enter the Fasterkatt. With a recommended temp range of 25 to 45 degrees while still being highly water resistant and breathable thanks to a waterproof breathable membrane (the upper is waterproof, but due to zippers etc., 45NRTH calls the shoe "water resistant"...kind of confusing). Want to make these work in even colder temps? Word to the wise: size up if you're not sure or in between sizes, that way you'll have room for bulkier wool socks.
So what else does the Fasterkatt have going on? Let's list the salient features:
UPPER - Rubberized textile, stretch poly, fleece, suede microfiber, durable action leather mudguard
INSOLE - Waffled foam to trap heat, reflective aluminum, wool felt, sculpted for arch support
OUTSOLE - Real rubber, anti-slip micro-glass filament lugs
MIDSOLE - Fiberglass-injected nylon with high impact resistance
CLOSURE - Cord lace inner boot closure, #5 marine grade zippered outer closure
SIZES - Men’s Standard Width 38-50 (no size 49)
LAST - Performance last designed for rigorous training and competition positions the foot for optimal energy transfer, with a roomy forefoot that provides comfort for longer rides.
SUGGESTED TEMPERATURE RANGE - 25°F (-3°C) – 45°F (7°C)
WATERPROOF-BREATHABLE MEMBRANE - An ultra-thin sheet of microporous material behind our textile shells keeps you dry and warm in the harshest weather conditions. Liquid water molecules from outside of the garment are larger than vapor molecules created by body heat from the inside. The microscopic pores are smaller than liquid water molecules, but larger than vapor molecules. As a result, waterproof-breathable membranes stop liquid from the outside, but release vapor from the inside for thermal and moisture regulation.
ANTI-SLIP MICROGLASS RUBBER - Microscopic glass fibers are electrostatically aligned in the rubber compound to create abrasive protruding shards. These shards are the microglass filaments that create friction on slippery surfaces such as ice, wet wood, wet linoleum and wet metal found on many stairs and floors. This friction is achieved by breaking through the layer of surface liquid between your rubber sole and the ground.
